My Kickstart Employment Journey – Constance Wallace
I can’t believe I’m already four months into my six-month Kickstart employment journey with Buy local Norfolk (BLN).
Job hunting for so long had been very tough, and while I was very excited to get the job, I was so nervous! I was thinking about all the mistakes I might make, or that I might get asked to do something I didn’t know how to do.
But I quickly realised I was worrying over nothing. My manager was incredibly patient with me, kind and approachable, always there whenever I had a question or problem. I was also pleased to find I was given many opportunities to try out new things. I’ve built various new skill sets, as well as improve on skills I already had.
From day one, I was given a variety of tasks. This has included proofreading, research, emailing, engaging on the BLN social channels, and creating content to promote the online shop. I’m an organised person, and I’m always up for a new challenge. This meant that while many of the tasks were daunting, I got stuck in and met all my deadlines.
I’ve also started taking minutes, which has helped me work on both my listening and focusing skills. I often take minutes for our team meetings, which I really enjoy, and seeing my progress makes me proud!
Another highlight and challenge was being interviewed by Chris Goreham on BBC Radio Norfolk about my experience of the Kickstart Scheme. It was early on in my employment; I didn’t have much notice, and I’d never done anything like that before. I was so afraid I’d forget what to say, or say something wrong. But the interview went better than I could have imagined, and I was so pleased to get great feedback from my manager and the BLN Directors.
Another challenge was networking. I hadn’t been to a network meeting before, and I was really nervous. The first one I went to was via Zoom, but now I’ve been to two in-person events, and I was so glad to find out that everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was great to meet new people, and find out more about them and their businesses. One of my favourite parts of the job is seeing the members’ online posts while I engage on the BLN Instagram account – getting to put a face to the business is so much more personable.
Circling back to the start of my employment, I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time. I’ve always loved the idea of working in marketing, especially in digital marketing, and my experience at BLN has made me even more sure that I want a career in this industry. I’m looking forward to seeing where the future takes me.
