Hello everyone, my name’s Ian and I run the BuyLocal Norfolk Twitter account. I haven’t been a member of BuyLocal for long, so some of you may already know me, but I suspect many of you won’t. If I don’t know you, hopefully we’ll have the opportunity to meet at the next BuyLocal Meeting.

The @BuyLocalNorfolk Twitter account carries a lot of influence. It now has around 11,000 followers, approximately half of whom are based in Norfolk. This makes it a great platform for promoting not only the Buy Local cause, but our own respective local businesses too.

With the consistent growth I’ve been seeing so far, I can see our Twitter account going from strength to strength. And with the help of our members I’m confident we can achieve so much more. That’s why I’ve included a few suggestions below that will help us build our presence, and that I hope will benefit your businesses too.

Let’s get acquainted

  • If you haven’t already, get your business on Twitter. There are plenty of good reasons to do so.
  • If we’re not connected yet, follow @BuyLocalNorfolk.
  • If you are a registered member of BuyLocal Norfolk and we haven’t followed you, or you haven’t been added to the BuyLocal Norfolk members list yet, please send us a direct message (DM) on Twitter and we’ll add you.

Spread the word

  • Add the #BuyLocalNorfolk hashtag to your tweets — I monitor this feed and will try to retweet and engage with the conversation there. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, you can learn more about using hashtags.
  • As a member of BuyLocal Norfolk, and a supporter of the local economy, you have the right to associate yourself with our brand. So add ‘@BuyLocalNorfolk member’ to your profile description. Take advantage of the fact that being a member of BLN is something that sets you apart from your competition!
  • Follow our Twitter members list, and share it with your followers. Keep that list in mind when making buying decisions, or when friends ask you for a recommendation.
  • Follow everybody else on our members list too — let’s all get talking to one another!
  • Are you tired of all those tweets on Fridays that just list loads of usernames, buy ventolin for nebulizer without giving good reasons to follow? Instead, why not use #FollowFriday to suggest that people support the local economy by following our members? Just add the link to our members list to your #FF tweet.

#NorfolkHour is a tweetchat focusing on all things Norfolk. You’ll find plenty of local people and businesses there, as well as some guests from further afield — it’s a very friendly and supportive atmosphere.

#NorfolkHour is a great opportunity to network and make new connections, and a brilliant way to promote your own business as well as #BuyLocalNorfolk. Come and join us on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 8:30 and 9:30pm.

You can usually find me on #NorfolkHour tweeting as @EggCupWebDesign. You’ll also want to look out for fellow BuyLocal Norfolk member @IceniMagazine, who’ve stepped into the void as the promoter of #NorfolkHour. If you decide to pop along one evening, say hello to us and we’ll give you a shoutout!

Feedback welcome

Like the BuyLocal Norfolk directors, the work I do for BLN is crowbarred in alongside the work I do to run my own business. That means I might not always be able to respond to every tweet, but I try to engage as much as I can.

Open communication is the key to success in business as in life however, so do let me know if you have suggestions for improvements, or if you think I’ve really dropped the ball on something. I’ll do my best to take your suggestions on board.

Finally, BuyLocal Norfolk is a shared resource, run by its members for its members. Any success for BLN is a success for all of us, so if we pull together we each stand to benefit enormously.
